According to one expert, flexible working could change "the face of employment" in the UK, which may affect those in accounting jobs.

Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, explained some companies are not as keen on the idea as others.

However, he believes it is a positive step and one that many organisations have reaped the rewards of.

"There are many critical case studies out there from large employers who have implemented it successfully without causing widespread disruption to the workforce," Mr Flaxton explained.

He also welcomed the fact that the new coalition government is continuing to encourage flexible working in the same way Labour did previously.

Mr Flaxton suggested that in order for flexible working to be successful, employers need to achieve a greater level of understanding.

According to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the right to request flexible working will be extended to parents with children under the age of 18 from April 2011.
