OVERVIEW

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands and a self-governing Crown Dependency with its own legal, fiscal and administrative systems. It is not part of the United Kingdom and is defended and internationally represented by the UK government. Statistics Jersey published a provisional resident population estimate of 103,650 at the end of 2023.

Jersey is internationally recognised for its financial and professional services sector, which remains central to the island’s economy. Government of Jersey policy materials describe the industry as a significant contributor to the island and identify core strengths in private wealth, funds, capital markets and banking. For AP Executive, Jersey is therefore an important jurisdiction for executive search and recruitment across trust and fiduciary, wealth management, family office, legal, compliance, private banking and related financial services disciplines.

For employers, Jersey offers a mature professional services environment, an established regulatory framework and strong connectivity to UK and international markets. For senior professionals, the island remains relevant for roles in fiduciary services, private client, funds, legal, compliance and broader financial services, particularly where offshore or cross-border expertise is valued.

WHY CHOOSE JERSEY

Jersey remains an attractive jurisdiction for business activity and executive recruitment because of its established financial services sector, respected legal and regulatory framework and strong international links. The island has a long-standing reputation in private wealth, trust and fiduciary services, banking, legal services, funds and other specialist areas that continue to require experienced senior talent.

From a business perspective, Jersey combines a sophisticated professional services ecosystem with a clear corporate and tax framework. Jersey government guidance notes that the island has its own fiscal system, and states that there is no capital gains tax or inheritance tax. In addition to its business advantages, Jersey offers proximity to the UK and France and a high-quality living environment.

Setting up a Business

The requirements for setting up a company in Jersey depend on the structure of the business and the activities it intends to carry on. Businesses typically begin by deciding on the most appropriate structure, such as sole trader, partnership or limited company. Jersey’s official guidance states that limited companies must be incorporated with the Jersey Financial Services Commission before applying for a business licence.

The JFSC Registry handles company incorporation in Jersey. Current JFSC guidance explains that all limited companies must be incorporated through the myRegistry portal, and applicants should prepare the required information and supporting documents before submitting the application.

Depending on the nature of the business, additional licensing, tax or regulatory requirements may also apply, particularly in regulated sectors such as financial and professional services.

REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYEES WISHING TO RELOCATE

Relocation requirements in Jersey depend on nationality and immigration status. British and Irish citizens do not need a work permit to work in Jersey. Everyone else will require a work permit, which must be applied for by the prospective employer.

Jersey’s current work permit policy states that all persons who are not British or Irish require immigration permission to visit, work, study or settle in Jersey. The policy is updated regularly, and employers are expected to check the latest version before making an application.

Candidates should always review the latest immigration and employment requirements before relocating, and employers should confirm the correct permission route before making an international hire in Jersey.
